"He
is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.
You are his life, his love, his leader.
He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of
his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."

The
Breed
The
above pretty much sums it up! The Australian Shepherd is
one of the most intelligent, versatile, easy to train breeds.
They are extremely active being from the origin of a herding
dog bred to share the many aspects of a farm's daily activities
... stock dogs, guardians of family and property as well
as companions. Don't expect an Aussie to be a couch potato
all day, they will not do well. Maybe in the evening when
the family is settled but he will still be doing a job,
watching over his people. The Aussie must have socialization
and contact with people and although an Aussie may seem
reserved and cautious around strangers they generally are
friendly with everyone, often "smiling" not to
be mistaken for bearing teeth. Poorly socialized and under
exposed Aussies will probably be more protective and may
not accept strangers well and may end up with unwanted behaviors.
It is important for those interested in having an aussie
to realize the value of training and obedience. This will
help owners learn how to channel their aussie companion's
energy into appropriate behaviors. Aussies are very quick
to learn new behaviors which is one reason they are so easily
housebroken! But if left to fend for themselves the learned
behavior could end up being chewing, digging, barking or
any number of undesirables.
Aussies are wonderful for those who are committed to having
a highly trainable, really smart, active, loyal, humorous,
sweet, enthusiastic ... canine companion. These special
animals deserve special people.
